Fil-Chi biz groups urge PH, China: Hold talks amid sea row

Several Filipino-Chinese business groups have appealed to the governments of the Philippines and China to de-escalate increasing tension in the West Philippine Sea through dialogue at a neutral and diplomatic venue.

The Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce Industry, Inc. (FFCCII) and 32 other Filipino-Chinese business and civic federations on Tuesday, June 25, issued a joint statement to call Manila’s and Beijing’s attentions amid developments in the disputed waters.

They asked for the establishment of a neutral and diplomatic venue for discussion that will uphold a rules-based order in a bid “to protect the sovereignty of both nations and maintain cordial relations across the Asian region.”

The groups said they are backing President Marcos’ call for diplomacy in managing differences as well as his call for a peaceful resolution of the dispute.

“Instead of strife, let us choose harmony. Instead of conflict, let us choose stability. In these tumultuous times, with rising tensions in other parts of the world, let us not risk the unity that has prevailed in our Asian region for hundreds of years,” their joint statement read.

The groups believed that it is only through constructive dialogue that is “devoid of reproach and condemnation” that both sides will be able “to find common ground that will lead to an amicable resolution of our differences.”

“We value the friendly relations between our countries that span generations. We are connected by cultural affinities, family ties, and substantial economic partnerships. Together we endured the trials of World War II and remained allies in many ways,” they said.

“Our nations have consistently showcased the manifold benefits of mutual respect. As such, we implore both sides to refrain from actions or declarations that will only fuel the already precarious situation,” they added.
