Philippines raises Alert Level 2 in New Caledonia


The Philippine government has raised an Alert Level 2 or Restriction Phase in the French territory of New Caledonia as it declared a state of emergency due to rioting.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) that around 200 Filipinos and individuals of Filipino descent will be affected by the restriction.

They are "advised to remain vigilant, avoid public places, and restrict non-essential movement," it said.

"Filipinos are also advised to monitor and follow guidelines set by local authorities," it added.

The French government on May 15 imposed a state of emergency to boost police powers amid deadly unrest that reportedly stemmed from movements that are pro-independence from the French government and those that are against.
