TACLOBAN CITY – The 8th Infantry “Stormtroopers” Division mourned the death of a soldier in an encounter with the New People's Army in Barangay Lourdes, Las Navas, Northern Samar, on May 16.
SOLDIERS pay tribute to Corporal Isagani Balmes from the 19th Infantry Battalion who was killed in an encounter in Las Navas, Northern Samar on May 16.
Corporal Isagani Balmes from the 19th Infantry Battalion and a Taft, Eastern Samar native, died from fatal injuries during the 15-minute encounter.
Balmes led the Community Support Program which facilitated the provision of essential services to the community.
Major Gen. Camilo Ligayo, commander of the 8th ID, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of an outstanding soldier.
Ligayo highlighted Balmes' unwavering dedication and service in the quest for peace in Eastern Visayas.
“The Philippine Army extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Corporal Balmes. His heroism and dedication will never be forgotten,” Ligayo said.
Balmes had been awarded the Gold Cross Medal, the third-highest military award for heroism, for his courageous actions in an encounter with the Front Committee-1 (D), Sub-Regional Committee Emporium in Sitio Gibulwangan, Barangay Senonogan, Pambujan, Northern Samar, on September 15.
“Corporal Balmes’ valor and dedication to duty epitomize the highest ideals of military service. His sacrifice will be remembered and honored by his comrades and the nation,” Ligayo said.
