Lee Vann Corteza and Chezka Centeno swept their respective rivals to rule the men's and women's division of the Las Vegas Open 10-Ball Championships at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino over the weekend.

The 44-year-old Corteza, a runner-up finisher in the 2009 WPA World 10-Ball Championship, displayed his old, deadly form and bested fellow veteran Carlo Biado, 4-2, 4-3, in the all-Filipino final.

Corteza actually had to thread through the eye of the needle before reaching the top prize, coming off from the loser’s bracket and dumping his next rivals en route to the finals.

He started off with victories over American Maximinio Martinez, 4-0, 4-0, and Singaporean Aloysius Yapp, 4-2, 1-4, 4-2, before absorbing a 4-3, 2-4, 4-3, to be relegated to the loser’s bracket.

His 4-3, 2-4, 4-2 win over New Zealand’s Sullivan Clark in the loser’s qualification set the tone in his next matches as he bested Roland Garcia, 4-2, 4-3; American Skyler Woodward, 4-0, 2-4, 3-3 (4-3), Greece’s Alex Kazakis, 4-0, 4-3; and Chinese Taipei’s Chung Ko Ping, 4-3, 4-0, before beating Biado.

Meanwhile, Centeno hardly flexed her muscles in outplaying 2017 World 9-Ball Champion Chen Siming of China, 4-2, 4-2, to capture the women’s title.

The reigning world 10-ball champion started off with a bang with a 4-0, 4-0 win over United States’ Emily Callado, before ousting Australian Jasmin Ouschan, 0-4, 4-1, 4-3; Allison Fisher, 4-2, 4-3; Chinese Taipei’s Chou Chieh-Yu, 4-3, 1-4, 4-2; and South Korean Seo Seoa, 4-3, 0-4, 3-3 (4-3).

Corteza pocketed $30,000 (around P1.6 million) top prize while Centeno won $18,000 (around P1 million).
