The Department of Health (DOH) has reported nearly 500 holiday road crashes, six of which resulted in fatalities from Dec. 22 to 6 a.m. on Dec. 31, which marks a significant increase in accidents compared to last year.

It said there have been a total of 496 road accidents, which is a 33 percent increase from 2023.

In the past 24 hours alone, 39 new accidents were recorded.

Out of the total accidents, six people lost their lives. Four of the fatalities were involved in motorcycle accidents.

The DOH said 83 individuals involved in the accidents were found to be under the influence of alcohol.

Meanwhile, 427 did not use safety accessories such as helmets or seatbelts.

To prevent more accidents, it urged motorists to make wearing helmets a habit, especially for motorcycle riders, and to always wear seatbelts for drivers and passengers.

It also emphasized the importance of not driving under the influence of alcohol or when feeling fatigued, as these factors can impair coordination, concentration, and quick responses to unexpected situations on the road.

The DOH encouraged everyone to follow speed limits and traffic signs to ensure a safe and smooth journey.

Drivers should also have seven to eight hours of sleep before traveling to remain alert and ready for the road.

In addition, drivers should avoid distractions such as cell phone use while driving.
