The National Commission on Culture and the Arts and the local government of Rosales, Pangasinan led the unveiling of the centennial bust of National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose at the Presidencia Grounds on Dec. 3. The unveiling is in commemoration of Jose’s 100th birth anniversary.
Born and raised in Rosales, Pangasinan, Jose is celebrated as a literary icon. The National Artist Award was bestowed upon him in 2001. The unveiling of his bust in his hometown is a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy, particularly his contributions to Philippine literature.
One of Jose’s most iconic works, The Rosales Saga, is named after his birthplace. The five-part novel explores historical and political themes through the lens of the everyday Filipino, cementing its place as a cornerstone of Philippine literary heritage.
Rosales Municipal Mayor William Cezar, local councilors, and members of Jose’s family attended the ceremony. Before the unveiling, a deed of donation was signed to formalize the bust’s placement. A modest gathering followed, bringing together Jose’s family, the local government, and Rosales constituents.
The celebration also showcased the talents of proud Rosalian youth, with performances by the Rosales Choral and the Rosales Dance Troupe.
F. Sionil Jose is remembered as one of the most prolific Filipino authors, a mentor and teacher, and a staunch advocate for national progress. His works and ideals continue to inspire generations of Filipinos. www.ncca.gov.ph
