Charmaine Lagman, along with her husband Mike, is a builder, a construction magnate with interests in information technology. On weekdays, her days are spent building structures of steel, glass, and concrete, vertical or horizontal, from residences to commercial high rises to roads and bridges. On Sunday, she rests, but rest to her is divine work, filling her heart with gratitude by spending it with the one thing she has built that matters the most—her family that, with Mike and their children, she has made strong on a foundation of love, respect, openness, honesty, and joy.
What is your idea of a perfect Sunday?
My idea of a perfect Sunday is starting the day with two important things—attending morning Mass to find peace and [express] gratitude, and then enjoying a leisurely lunch out with my husband. If I’m fortunate, some of my children join us as well, which is always a cherished treat since they no longer live at home.
Best word to describe Sundays
If I had to choose one word to describe Sunday, it would be grateful. It’s a day for giving thanks, appreciating the blessings in life, pausing to rest, and cherishing time with family.
Book you recommend as a Sunday read
I’ll admit, I’m not a bookworm—I’m quite selective with my reading choices. I tend to gravitate toward informative books, particularly those about architecture, history, and museums. Recently, I’ve developed an interest in art, and I highly recommend Guggenheim: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Iconoclastic Masterpiece by Francesco Dal Co. It’s a fascinating dive into Wright’s unique architectural vision and the enduring legacy of the Guggenheim.
Best Sunday companion
My family is truly the best companion on a Sunday. There’s no place that feels as comforting and complete as home when we’re all together. Sundays with them bring a sense of warmth and belonging that nothing else can replace.
What is the most extravagant thing you could think of having or doing on a Sunday?
The most extravagant Sunday I can imagine would be hopping on a jet plane, flying to another country just to satisfy a craving for a particular dish, and then coming right back home afterward. It’s not just a dream—it’s a true wish, something I’d ask for if I ever got my hands on a genie’s lamp!
What would be the perfect topic for Sunday brunch conversation?
The perfect topic for me is reflecting on what we’ve accomplished throughout the week and sharing the lessons we’ve learned from those experiences. It’s a meaningful way to celebrate progress, gain insights, and motivate each other for the days ahead.
Best movie or series that once made your Sunday
My weekdays are filled with work, often exhausting and stressful, so when Sunday rolls around, we like to unwind with movies that are lighthearted and uplifting. Believe it or not, we love watching Disney classics or fun, feel-good films like Iron Man. It’s the perfect way to relax, laugh, and recharge for the week ahead.
A quotable quote about Sunday that's made for you
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” — Isaiah 40:31
This verse offers a powerful reminder that placing our hope in God brings strength and endurance, lifting us up even in challenging times.
What does “wear your Sunday Best” mean to you?
My Sunday best is all about honoring and celebrating—starting with gratitude at Mass, giving thanks for the blessings in my life. I then carry that spirit of celebration into a joyful meal shared with my family. It’s a day to pause, appreciate, and connect, making Sunday feel truly special.
If you were to write a book about the Sundays of your life, what would be the title?
I’d give it the title Celebrate. Sunday is a day to rejoice in prayer and fill our hearts with gratitude, whether for the small moments or the big milestones we’ve experienced throughout the week. It’s about taking time to reflect, appreciate, and cherish all that we’ve received and accomplished.
Best Sunday ever in your life
The best Sundays of my life are every Sunday spent with my family. Each one is filled with love, laughter, and togetherness, making every week’s end a treasured memory. There’s truly nothing more fulfilling. My best Sunday memories are made every week, as I always ensure that Sundays are reserved for giving thanks to God for all the blessings in my life. It’s a sacred time to reflect, express gratitude, and find peace, making each Sunday truly special.
Worst Sunday in your life
When I had Covid, the Alpha variant. We were among the first to experience it, and I remember feeling incredibly sick and helpless. No one knew exactly what to do. Everything was uncertain, and there were no established treatments or medicines. It was a time of guesswork and fear, with everyone navigating in the dark.
If Sunday were a flavor, what would this flavor be
My ultimate favorite dessert has to be pavlova. It’s decadently sinful yet utterly rewarding—a perfect treat to end the week on a sweet note. I love indulging in something truly special on Sundays, and pavlova feels like the perfect reward.
Where in the world would you like to be next Sunday, if you can just go there by magic
I’d love to be at my Cape Cod home, cooking a beautiful meal for my family, then watching the sunset by the lake with a glass of champagne in hand. As the day fades, we’d make s’mores, listen to the sounds of nature, and feel the gentle breeze. In those quiet moments, surrounded by the memories we’ve created together, I’d feel a deep sense of peace and gratitude.
