Some Filipinas trafficked to Cambodia to become surrogate mothers — DFA

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday, Oct. 6, disclosed that some female Filipino nationals were being trafficked to Cambodia to become surrogates.

DFA Undersecretary Eduardo Jose de Vega said that at least 13 Filipinas are currently pregnant. They cannot be rescued and repatriated as they are in Cambodian hospitals.

De Vega advised those who are seeking opportunities abroad, particularly in South East Asia, to only undergo employment process through official channels, such as through the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).

He warned that many are now falling victims to fraudulent job opportunities and are ending up as surrogate mothers or scammers.

"If it sounds very good, then it's too good to be true," he said.
