Yabu Pushelberg is a globally renowned design studio with offices in the couple’s hometown of Toronto and in New York City. Founded 44 years ago, in 1980, by Canadian designers George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg, the firm has evolved beyond traditional interior design to offer services as creative directors of experience, branding and positioning, interiors, lighting, textiles, related products, and styling. Between the two offices, George and Glenn currently employ a staff of over 100 people.
As George likes to describe their set-up, “two cities, one office,” it reflects how they interact—like two people with one thought process. The duo finishes each other’s sentences, exchanging looks honed over 40 years of both professional and personal collaboration. They also share a wicked sense of humor that seems to say, “We are serious, but let’s also have serious fun!”
In fact, there are moments when they seem more like a subtle comedy duo than a versatile design team, and it works in unexpected ways, endearing them to any audience they’re presenting to.
While there may be initial disorientation over what they’re doing on the podium, it’s all part of their self-deprecating humor, and I loved it! I’m grateful to Ayala Land Premier for bringing the couple to meet the media and their clients.
The luxurious Park Villas on Makati Avenue/Apartment Ridge Road is the project that the design duo is attached to, and it’s a partnership they are genuinely excited about.
When asked which dream city in Asia they’d like to be associated with, they explain that it’s not about the city itself but rather which partner makes it all worthwhile. They are happy to report that working with Ayala Land Premier has been a dream experience.
They discuss the Park Villas building design by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, which they refer to as a key factor in making this project so exciting. Instead of straight, linear lines, the building features a fluid shape that inspired George and Glenn to create spaces that bring the outdoors in. They utilized natural materials to ensure that the luxury element of exclusivity still possess something intimate and inviting.
There’s a subdued elegance that blends modernity with the most useful technological advances. However, the two designers stress that technology can be employed without making spaces feel cold or unfeeling. There is still an emphasis on people, and not just the space when it comes to the two designers.
Glenn spoke about how they envision who will be living in the spacious 600-square-meter units. They focus on making the spaces functional and responsive to the needs, desires, and dreams of these occupants. This philosophy has earned them several awards and accolades, including the Order of Canada. The photos of their work on the Aman Residences in Tokyo are truly impressive—modern yet warm, whimsical yet intelligent.
