The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Sunday, Oct. 20 that a low-pressure area (LPA) located 1,460 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon around 8 a.m. is highly likely to develop into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.

PAGASA Weather Specialist Grace Castañeda said the LPA is expected to enter the PAR by Sunday afternoon or evening and may develop into a tropical depression Sunday afternoon or Monday morning, Oct. 21.

The next name on PAGASA’s list for tropical cyclones is “Kristine.”

Castañeda said PAGASA is not ruling out the possibility of landfall in the eastern portions of Northern or Central Luzon in the coming days.

However, since it has not yet developed into a tropical depression, there remains high uncertainty regarding its track.

Castañeda urged the public to continue monitoring PAGASA updates regarding this weather disturbance.

Meanwhile, the trough or extension of the LPA has already begun to bring scattered rains and thunderstorms to Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, and Quezon.

Isolated rain showers or thunderstorms may also occur in Eastern Visayas and Bicol Region.

PAGASA said the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ)—where winds from the northern and southern hemispheres converge—could lead to cloudy conditions with scattered rains and thunderstorms in Zamboanga Peninsula, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and Palawan.

The rest of the country is expected to be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA warned of possible flash floods or landslides across the country.
