The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has revived its probe into the 2020 murder of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) board secretary and retired police general Wesley Barayuga.
NBI Deputy Chief of Staff for Legal Services Yentl Malicad said on Thursday, Oct. 3, that NBI Director Jaime B. Santiago has already instructed “to revive the case kasi nga po may ongoing investigation ngayon sa House of Representatives Quad Committee (because of the ongoing House of Representatives Quad Committee investigation).
“So the good director created a team to conduct an investigation on the killing of Wesley Barayuga," Malicad told journalists during a "Kapihan) at the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Malicad said the NBI has previously conducted an investigation on the case but lamented that “we have yet to gather evidence para makapagfile po tayo ng kaso (to file a case).”
“So the documents we have gathered before will be evaluated together with the pieces of evidence that will be gathered sa panibagong investigation (in the new investigation),” she said.
“From there, i-checheck po natin (we will check) if there is sufficient evidence to file a case against those who are involved in the killing,” she added.
During the House Quad Committee hearings, Lt. Col. Santie Mendoza of the Philippine National Police-Drug Enforcement Group (PNP-DEG) and his informant Nelson Mariano admitted their involvement in the killing.
The two witnesses alleged that they were instructed by retired Police colonels Royina Garma and Edilberto Leonardo for the 2020 killing of Barayuga.
Garma was the general manager of PCSO when the killing took place.
