A WOMAN was shot dead by her ex-boyfriend inside the Guimaras State University on Friday.

Police identified the fatality as 22-year-old Christine Mae Piamonte of San Lorenzo, Guimaras.

Investigation said the suspect, 22-year-old Zoilo Sereño, Piamonte’s ex-boyfriend and a native of Pulupandan town in Negros Occidental province, arrived at the main campus of Guimaras State University (GSU) in the municipality of Buenavista at past 2 p.m. to reconcile with Piamonte.

However, the suspect found out that Piamonte had a new boyfriend, 26-year-old Ram Arlo Tacubay, and saw the couple for himself.

He drew a firearm and shot Piamonte dead and wounded Tacubay.

Initial investigation by the Buenavista Municipal Police Station said it was a crime of passion.

Sereño hired a small boat from Pulupandan on Friday morning to travel to Guimaras.

In a statement, GSU administrators said that the suspect was able to get inside the university when he lied to security guards that he was going to give allowance to Piamonte whom he claimed was his girlfriend.

GSU administrators also said that Tacubay is not an employee.

Tacubay was contracted by the local government unit (LGU) of Buenavista for a cultural performance to cap the Palayag Festival on Sunday, January 21.

The university campus was only a venue for the practice of the cultural performers.

GSU is reviewing its security protocols as a result of the deadly incident.

“We are reinforcing our security protocols to prevent any similar occurrences in the future,” the GSU administration said in a statement.

The GSU has extended financial assistance to the family of Piamonte.
