Wind signals lifted as ‘Carina’ weakens, moves away; new LPA forms

All tropical cyclone wind signals have been lifted as typhoon “Carina” (international name: Gaemi) weakened and moved farther away from the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its bulletin at 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 25.

Carina left the Philippine area of responsibility on Thursday morning and was last located 550 kilometers north-northwest of Itbayat, Batanes.

PAGASA said the typhoon is now less likely to directly bring heavy rains over any portion of the country.

However, the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” enhanced by Carina, will continue to bring heavy to intense rains over Ilocos Region, Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Zambales, and Bataan in the next few hours.

Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rains may persist over Zambales, Bataan, and Benguet from Friday to Saturday, July 26 to 27.

New LPA

PAGASA Weather Specialist Ana Clauren-Jorda said a low pressure area (LPA) formed on Thursday afternoon, located 985 kilometers east of southeastern Mindanao.

She said the LPA is still too far to directly affect any part of the country.

Over the next 24 to 48 hours, the weather disturbance has a slim chance of developing into a tropical depression, Clauren-Jorda added.

However, she said PAGASA will continue to monitor the LPA for any changes in the latest forecast or potential impacts on the country in the coming days.
