ITCZ, easterlies to bring rain showers over parts of the Philippines

Two weather systems are expected to continue to bring rain showers and thunderstorms across parts of the country in the next 24 hours, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Wednesday, July 3.

PAGASA Weather Specialist Obet Badrina said the country may remain tropical cyclone-free for the next two to three days.

However, the prevalence of the easterlies and the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) will result in cloudy and rainy weather in some areas.

Warm winds from the Pacific Ocean, also known as “easterlies,” may cause cloudy weather with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms in Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, and Palawan.

PAGASA warned that flash floods or landslides may occur in the region due to moderate to heavy rains.

The ITCZ, a convergence of winds from the northern and southern hemispheres where rain-bearing clouds form, will also bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms to Cagayan Valley, Aurora, Quezon, Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Caraga, and Davao Region.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers caused by localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA also advised the public to remain vigilant as flash floods or landslides may occur during severe thunderstorms.

Based on the PAGASA’s forecast for July 4, the likelihood of rainfall across select key cities is the following: Metro Manila (40 percent), Laoag City (30 percent), Baguio City (30 percent), Legazpi City (40 percent), Puerto Princesa City (40 percent), Metro Cebu (30 percent), Bacolod City (60 percent), Cagayan de Oro City (40 percent), Metro Davao (40 percent), and Zamboanga City (40 percent).
