The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has detected an increase in seismic activity at Negros Island's Kanlaon Volcano in the last 24 hours, following its "explosive eruption" on Monday evening, June 3.
In the volcano bulletin issued at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, Phivolcs reported 43 volcanic earthquakes in the last 24 hours.
This was an increase from the eight volcanic earthquakes that occurred before eruption.
So far, this is the only significant observation following Kanlaon Volcano's six-minute eruption, which resulted in a five-kilometer-high plume above its vent.
Phivolcs noted that there is “increasing unrest” at Kanlaon Volcano, which has placed the volcano on Alert Level 2.
It explained that the unrest is caused by shallow magmatic processes, which could eventually lead to more explosive eruptions or even a hazardous magmatic eruption.
The public is strongly advised to remain vigilant and avoid the four-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone to reduce the risk of "sudden" explosions, rockfalls, and landslides.
In the event of ashfall events that may affect communities near Kanlaon’s crater, people should cover their noses and mouths with a damp, clean cloth or dust mask.
