House Speaker Martin Romualdez has been designated as caretaker of Palawan's first legislative district.

The designation took place following a motion during plenary session late afternoon Wednesday, March 20. Nobody from the 300-plus strong House of Representatives objected to the motion.

It was only last March 13 when Palawan 1st district Rep. Edgardo “Egay” Salvame passed away.

"I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of our colleague and friend, Palawan 1st district Rep. Edgardo “Egay” Salvame. It is a personal loss for me and a huge loss for our community and the nation," Romualdez said in a statement following Salvame's death.

"Cong. Egay was far more than just a fellow lawmaker; he was a true advocate for Palawan, a devoted public servant whose compassion and dedication resonated deeply with those he represented," added the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) chairman.

"His departure creates a significant gap in Congress, but even more so, it leaves a profound sense of loss within us. Egay was not just a colleague; he was a trusted companion and a source of inspiration, leaving behind a legacy of service that will be celebrated and remembered for years to come," added the House leader.

Romualdez is also the caretaker of Palawan's third legislative district. The erstwhile congressman of the district, Edward Hagedorn, died in Oct. 2023.

Romualdez is Leyte 1st district congressman.
