‘Habagat’ to bring rain showers, thunderstorms to parts of extreme Northern Luzon

Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms may continue to affect some areas of extreme Northern Luzon due to the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Tuesday, Aug. 8.

PAGASA warned of the possibility of flooding or landslides in Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur due to moderate to occasional heavy monsoon rains.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

Moreover, a gale warning was raised on Tuesday due to “strong to gale-force winds” associated with the southwest monsoon enhanced by severe tropical storm Khanun, formerly Falcon, which was outside the country’s area of responsibility.

Rough to very rough seas are expected over the coastal waters of Batanes, the northern part of Ilocos Norte, and the northern part of Cagayan, including Babuyan Islands.

“Fishing boats and other small sea craft are advised not to venture out into the sea, while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves,” PAGASA said.
