47% of Filipinos competent in English language — SWS

A Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey conducted in March 2023 bared that 47 percent of Filipino adults are competent in the English language.

In the survey results released on Wednesday, Aug. 16, SWS also found that 80 percent of Filipinos understand spoken English, 80 percent can read the language, 69 percent can write in English, and 55 percent speak the language.

Meanwhile, any of these skills do not apply to 9 percent of Filipinos.

“In March 2023, Filipinos’ usage of the English language is at its highest since September 2000: 9 percent fully use it; 35 percent fairly use it; 41 percent partially only; and 14 percent almost no use,” SWS pointed out.

During the survey period, SWS also revealed that 96 percent of Filipinos read Filipino, 93 percent understand spoken Filipino, 93 percent can write the language, 87 percent speak it, and 75 percent think in Filipino.

This means that at least three out of four Filipinos (75 percent) are competent in the Filipino language.

Meanwhile, one percent of the respondents said any of these skills do not apply to them.

SWS also noted that in March 2023, Filipinos’ usage of the Filipino language is at its highest since September 2000: 53 percent fully use it; 29 percent fairly use it, 15 percent partially only, and 4 percent almost no use.

The survey was conducted from March 26 to 29, with 1,200 adult respondents nationwide.
