Forensic anthropologists may be called in probe of human remains discovered inside Bilibid’s septic tank – Sec Remulla

Department of Justice (DOJ) Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla is eyeing the help of forensic anthropologists in the probe of human remains found inside a septic tank of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.

The discovery of human remains inside a septic tank of NBP’s maximum-security compound was disclosed early Wednesday, July 26, by Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Deputy Director General for Operations Angelina L. Bautista in an interview on DZBB.

Bautista said that BuCor has yet to determine how many human remains were found inside the septic tank and if they belonged to the missing persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the NBP.

Reports stated that one of the remains found were those of missing PDL Michael Angelo Cartoja.

“‘Yung nawawalang PDL nahanap na, patay, decapitated (The missing PDL has been found dead and decapitated),” Remulla said.

He said investigation is ongoing on the septic tank discovery.

“I’m expecting a comprehensive report at the end of the day from Director General Catapang (Bureau of Corrections Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr.),” he said.

He also said the investigation is expected to reveal how long has the dumping of dead bodies at the septic tank has been taking place.

“Everything is still in the exploratory stage and we’re still trying to find out. Trying to get to the bottom of everything,” he added.
