Magnitude 5.6 quake hits Batanes — Phivolcs


A 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit Batanes province on Thursday night, May 25, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

In an earthquake bulletin issued on Thursday, Phivolcs said the quake struck 33 kilometers northeast of Itbayat, Batanes around 9:48 p.m.

The magnitude of the quake was initially recorded as 5.3, but Phivolcs later revised it to 5.6.

The tremor was felt at Intensity III (weak) in Itbayat, Batanes, Intensity II (slightly felt) in Basco and Mahatao, Batanes, and Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) in Ivana, Batanes.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

It said the earthquake may not have caused damage to houses, buildings, and other infrastructure, but advised the public to remain vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
