A water impoundment project that is seen to prevent flooding in Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija is nearly completed, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
Nueva Ecija 1st District Engineering Office (DEO), District Engineer Armando Z. Manabat said the Small Water Impounding Project (SWIP) was built in Sitio Tabon and includes the rehabilitation of a natural pond. It has P9.8 million and at now 93.7 percent completion.
When completed, Manabat said residents of Barangay Bambanaba in Cuyapo will experience improved access to water sources and will be less vulnerable to flooding.
“With an accomplishment rate of 93.7%, the water reservoir is being built not far from a pond located at the foot of high terrain. Once completed, this structure will efficiently store rainfall and run-off during a rainy season, thus preventing water overflow into nearby residential and agricultural communities,” said Manabat.
Manabat said they are now also excavating the shallow and uneven sections of the natural pond to deepen it by two to 2.4 meters.
“As of September 15, 2022, the project with a planned physical target of 42,436 cubic meters of soil excavation is 90% complete,” he added.
Apart from managing the flood risks, the project also benefited the agricultural sector as it is expected to provide ample water supply to irrigate the farmlands.
