UN chief calls for ceasefire in Israel-Hamas war

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is pressing for a humanitarian ceasefire in the developments in the Middle East as the world is pushing for a truce in the Israel-Hamas war.

In a series of posts on X, Guterres warned that the humanitarian system in war-torn Gaza “is facing a total collapse with unimaginable consequences for more than two million civilians.”

He said that needs in the Palestinian territory are “growing ever more critical and colossal, so he called for the permission of food, water, medicine and fuel to reach civilians there amid blockade on the borders.

"I repeat my call for a humanitarian ceasefire in the Middle East, the unconditional release of all hostages, and the delivery of life-saving supplies at the scale needed," Guterres said.

He added that everyone now must assume their responsibilities as this is a moment of truth" and "history will judge us all."

On Friday, nations gathered in an emergency special session to vote for a resolution calling for a humanitarian truce for cessation of hostilities between the Israeli government and Hamas militants.

Majority of the UN General Assembly's members voted in favor of the resolution that also demanded the release of hostages, protection of the civilians, access to humanitarian aid and basic supplies, among others.
