The Chinese tradition of offering cakes to lunar gods and goddesses started more than a thousand years ago.  During the reign of Tang Dynasty Emperor Xizong (AD 873–888), mooncakes were gifted by the imperial court to visiting scholars during the Mid-Autumn Festival, inspiring the pastry’s association with the festival, which this year falls on Sept. 29.

In the Philippines, we are very familiar with the most common Chinese mooncake, sometimes referred to as the Cantonese style, which is round, about four inches in diameter, and about one-and-a-half inches thick. The top crust of Cantonese mooncakes usually features auspicious Chinese characters or the name of the manufacturer. Fillings consist of a dense paste made from lotus beans, sweet red beans, or jujube.

The mooncake is no longer exclusively for royalty or the upper class. These days, during the Mid-Autumn Festival, relatives and friends exchange boxes of mooncakes while gathering to gaze at the moon and think of their loved ones. While they do so, they partake of the traditional mooncakes prepared and presented in the most surprising, and modern, ways.

They start with a delicious meal together with family members, and then spend time to admire the bright moon and eat moon cakes. There are many fascinating legends about the festival. These stories add romantic charm to the festival.

Homes feature an altar overflowing with moon cakes, watermelons, apples, red dates, plums, grapes, and other offerings, symbolizing family harmony.
On the day, people look up the full moon to thank the gods for the year’s blessings. People far away from home also express their homesickness by gazing at the moon. Family members who cannot make it to the reunion are remembered in a Chinese poem that says “May we live long and share the beauty of the moon together, even if we are hundreds of miles apart.”
Today, eating moon cakes and holding a banquet for families are traditions that continue to keep families together.
