Supporting and Developing the future of cybersecurity

Many businesses nowadays prioritize solid, reliable and airtight data security.  And why not, with the increasing use of technology in our daily lives, cyber threats have been growing aggressively.  To make things worse, there is a current lack of professionals who can face these challenges.  Recent studies have mentioned that most countries in Asia are finding it challenging to hire cybersecurity talents due to a skills shortage.

By 2025, there is a projected three million shortage of cybersecurity professionals, as shared by Maria Elizabeth de Guzman, Cybersecurity Leader and Executive Director, EY Global Delivery Services (EY GDS) Philippines. And while this is quite a concern, it also presents an opportunity for skilled talent and those interested to grow a technology career.

To help bridge the talent gap in the cybersecurity space, EY GDS is investing in training and providing upskilling opportunities to EY people.

Maria Elizabeth de Guzman, a global thought leader and speaker, is the first-ever female Certified Chief Information Security Officer (CCISO) in the Philippines. She has been recognized as one of the Top Women in Security in the ASEAN region in 2022 and 2021, and one of the Top Women in Security in the Philippines in 2020. She has been with EY GDS for five years and currently leads the cybersecurity team within the Consulting service line in EY GDS Philippines.

We operate in a vast digital landscape and cyber risks are evolving. Our call to action is to be up to date with these emerging threats and continue to invest and innovate,” De Guzman said.

What’s unique about cyberspace is that it’s not enough to have a technical mind; it requires strategies beyond technical recommendations. People with different backgrounds can offer various viewpoints and perspectives to navigate new and complex issues.

It doesn't really matter if one's background is not tech-related because technology is continuously evolving. For De Guzman, what matters is the motivation to learn and the passion to succeed. “We are not looking for someone very technical one hundred percent of the time. Technical skills can be learned but character, perseverance and resilience – these things are fundamental. We need these to excel in cybersecurity and other equally important roles across the organization. I am inviting everyone to check out our exciting available roles today,” she added.
