Magnitude 4.9 quake hits Surigao del Sur — Phivolcs

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake hit Surigao del Sur on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 19, based on the earthquake information issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the quake struck 8 kilometers southwest of Tandag City, Surigao del Sur around 12:47 p.m.

It was felt at Intensity III (weak) in Tandag City and Intensity II (slightly felt) in Cagwait, Surigao del Sur.

Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the tremor at Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) in Cabadbaran City in Agusan del Norte and Surigao City in Surigao del Norte.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

However, it does not expect damage or aftershocks because of this earthquake.
