A 5.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Leyte province on Sunday evening, Jan. 15, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Phivolcs said the quake struck 3 kilometers southeast of Leyte, Leyte around 8:28 p.m.
It said the earthquake was felt at Intensity III (weak) in Alangalang, Carigara, Babatngon, Barugo, Tacloban City, and Ormoc City in Leyte.
Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the tremor at Intensity IV in Carigara, Leyte, Intensity III in Alangalang and Ormoc City in Leyte, Intensity II in Calubian and Albuera in Leyte, and Intensity I in Borongan City, Eastern Samar and Bogo City, Cebu.
The earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
Phivolcs advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
