Mayor Abby reaffirms support for women, children's rights

Makati City Mayor Abby Binay voiced her support for the creation of programs and reforms aimed at ensuring the protection of women and children against discrimination and violence.

Binay made the statement during the #RightsforAll: Rights for Equality Forum on Women's Rights organized by SPARK Philippines held at the Ateneo Law School on Friday, Dec. 9.

"As we celebrate international human rights day and the 18-day campaign to eliminate violence against women and children, I stand before you today to call on everyone to take affirmative action towards the realization of human rights for all," Binay said

"Gender Equality and empowering women and girls are the core of the United Nations' list of sustainable development goals (SDGs). Worldwide, women and girls continue to face discrimination and violence and the majority continue to be denied even the most basic human rights. As leaders, we cannot take a blind eye to these injustices, and must strive to create better lives for all," she added.

The local chief explained that under her watch, Makati City is committed to pursuing an inclusive, equitable, and gender-responsive society where everyone has the opportunity to realize their full potential while enjoying equal rights and protection from violence.

Aside from women's rights, Binay also emphasized the local government's support for the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens, the youth and children, along with the LGBTQ+ community.

"We also created the gender and development council in Makati, which is responsible for formulating gender-responsive plans and policies with a focus on mainstreaming Equality across all sectors. We are also actively monitoring programs, initiatives, and protocols that ensure that women and members of the LGBTQ+ community are not left behind," Binay said.

"While Makati's made tremendous strides in pursuing human rights for all, our job is far from done. We need to reach out to communities to ensure that everyone is aware of their rights, and the resources available. Additionally, we must go further than protecting the existing rights. We must actively build a society where these rights are protected, respected, and celebrated," she added.

The mayor stressed that with the collaboration of different sectors, the country can make real progress in advancing the rights for all which include working together with both the local and national government, civil society organizations, faith groups, businesses, and individuals to keep these fundamental rights at the forefront of their collective efforts.

"Let us take every step possible to ensure that everyone can access and experience the full range of rights regardless of race, gender, class, ethnicity, or any other factor. Together, we can create a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and can exercise their rights without fear or prejudice," Binay said.
