The Philippines has extended its condolences to the People's Republic of China and its people after the passing of its former President Jiang Zemin.
Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Enrique Manalo on Monday said he visited the Chinese Embassy in Manila to sign a condolence book before also meeting the Chinese top diplomat in the country, Huang Xilian.
"I extend my most heartfelt condolences on the passing of former Chinese President Jiang Zemin, who oversaw China's phenomenal economic growth and stability," he said.
"At this time of national mourning in China, I share with the Chinese people our deepest sympathies," he added.
Jiang died on November 30 at the age of 96 due to leukemia and multiple organ failure, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported.
After the signing of the book of condolences, Manalo said he also had a brief chat with Huang on the status of Philippines-China bilateral relations.
