DOTr: Manila Subway construction in full swing

Construction of the P488.4 billion Metro Manila Subway Project’s (MMSP) is in full swing with contracts for stations and tunnels signed, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista announced in a statement issued Friday, Nov. 4. Bautista and the MMSP contractors yesterday signed the contracts for the subway’s stations and tunnels during a ceremony at Malacañang Palace.

The signing of the MMSP Contract Packages 102 and 103 brought to seven the total railway contracts that the DOTr secured. "We now have majority of these contracts awarded with construction of several sections in full swing," Bautista noted.

Contract Package 102 (CP102), a joint venture of Nishimatsu Construction Company Limited and D. M. Consunji Incorporated, covers the Quezon Avenue and East Avenue Underground Stations and Tunnels. It's a Civil Works – Build Only Contract, composed of main works for the two underground stations and tunnels located within Quezon City with a total route length of 3.162 kilometers and connecting to the Central Business District and other government and private institutions within Quezon City.

On the other hand, Contract Package 103 (CP103), under Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Company Limited, is for the Anonas and Camp Aguinaldo Underground Stations and Tunnels. The contract involves the Civil Works – Build Only Contract, composed of main works for two underground stations and its tunnels situated within Quezon City with a total route length of 6.604 kilometers and connecting Quezon City and Pasig City.

With 17 stations and a depot of 30.34 hectares, the civil works for the project’s two major segments are expected to generate more than 6,000 direct and indirect jobs. The 33.1-kilometer subway will run from Valenzuela City to Paranaque City, ending at Food Terminal Incorporated (FTI) with a connection to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

Funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Metro Manila Subway will reduce travel time from Valenzuela City to Pasay City from 1 hour and 38 minutes to 45 minutes, while servicing 519,000 passengers daily.

"With contract funding securely in place, there is no stopping the realization of the country’s Golden Age of Infrastructure under the Build Better More program of our President," according to Bautista. “We owe it to the Filipino people to build critical infrastructure that will not only spur progress and social change but also promote inter-connectivity, ease traffic, and reduce travel time,” President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. remarked during the contract signing.
