‘Paeng’ may pass through Calabarzon, Metro Manila on Saturday — PAGASA


Tropical storm Paeng (international name: Nalgae) may make landfall in Albay-Camarines Sur area or Catanduanes late Friday night, Oct. 28, or early Saturday morning, Oct. 29, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its latest bulletin.

After its landfall, PAGASA said the storm may likely to cross the Bicol peninsula until early Saturday afternoon and cross Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) and Metro Manila until evening.

“After emerging over Manila Bay, Paeng will briefly pass very close or over the Bataan peninsula between tomorrow late evening (Oct. 29) and Sunday early morning (Oct. 30),” PAGASA added.

As of 10 p.m., Friday, the center of tropical storm Paeng was already over the coastal waters of Rapu-Rapu, Albay.

It was moving west-northwestward at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour (kph), while packing maximum sustained winds of 85 kph near the center and gusts of up to 105 kph.

Tropical cyclone wind signals are still raised in many parts of the country as Paeng is expected to bring “strong” to “gale force” winds during its passage.

Signal No. 2 was hoisted over Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate including Ticao and Burias Islands, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Marinduque, Quezon including Polillo Islands, Laguna, Batangas, Cavite, Metro Manila, Rizal, Bulacan, southern portion of Aurora, central and southern portions of Nueva Ecija, central and southern portions of Tarlac, Pampanga, Bataan, central and southern portions of Zambales, northern and central portions of Oriental Mindoro, northern and central portions of Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Island, Romblon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, and northern portion of Leyte.

Meanwhile, Signal No. 1 was up in the central and southern portions of Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Benguet, Ifugao, Mountain Province, the southern portion of Ilocos Sur, La Union, the rest of Aurora, the rest of Nueva Ecija, the rest of Zambales, Pangasinan, the rest of Tarlac, the rest of Oriental Mindoro, the rest of Occidental Mindoro, northern portion of Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, Southern Leyte, Cebu including Bantayan and Camotes Islands, Bohol, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Guimaras, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, Siquijor, the rest of Leyte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte including Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands, northern portion of Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, northeastern portion of Agusan del Sur, Camiguin, and Misamis Oriental.

“Per latest track and intensity forecast, the highest wind signal that will likely be hoisted is Wind Signal No. 3 in anticipation of storm-force conditions associated with Paeng,” PAGASA said.

It said that Paeng may still intensify into a severe tropical storm ahead of its landfall.

PAGASA said Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Quezon including Polillo Islands, Marinduque, Romblon, Samar, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Occidental Mindoro, and Oriental Mindoro may experience heavy to torrential rains until Saturday morning.

Moderate to intense rains are also likely over Metro Manila, Zamboanga Peninsula, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Aurora, Bulacan, Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, Northern Samar, Negros Oriental, Cebu, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and the rest of Eastern Visayas.

Light to heavy rains are also possible over Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bataan, and the rest of Visayas.

From Saturday morning until evening, heavy to torrential rains are possible over Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Marinduque, Occidental Mindoro, and Oriental Mindoro.

Meanwhile, moderate to intense rains may prevail over mainland Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Western Visayas, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Bataan, Romblon, northern portion of Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, Camarines Norte, and Camarines Sur.

Light to heavy rains are also likely in the Ilocos Region and the rest of Central Luzon, Bicol Region, and Visayas.

From Saturday evening until Sunday morning, heavy to torrential rains may persist in Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, and Batangas.

Moderate to intense rains are also likely in mainland Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Western Visayas, Quezon including Polillo Islands, Marinduque, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, and the rest of Central Luzon, while light to heavy rains are possible over Ilocos Region, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Romblon, and northern portion of Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands.

“Under these conditions, widespread flooding and rain-induced landslides are expected, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazard as identified in hazard maps and in localities with significant antecedent rainfall,” PAGASA warned.
