Sec. Remulla has not seen, talked with arrested son

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin 'Boying' C. Remulla

Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla on Tuesday, Oct. 18, said he has neither seen nor talked to his eldest son Juanito Jose D. Remulla III who was arrested and charged with illegal importation and possession of dangerous drugs.

During a press conference, Secretary Remulla said: “I haven’t talked to him since the beginning. I have stayed away from his case. I have not asked anybody any favor.”

Juanito has been charged before the Las Pinas City regional trial court (RTC) with a non-bailable case of possession of illegal drugs under Republic Act No. 9165, the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

The complaint against him for illegal importation of dangerous drugs, also under RA 9165, has been turned over by the Las Pinas City prosecutor’s office to the Pasay City prosecutor’s office for preliminary investigation.

Rulings of city and provincial prosecutors may be elevated to the Office of the Secretary of Justice on petitions for review.

Remulla said he has already talked to his cousin who has been tapped as the lawyer of Juanito not to allow his son’s case to reach the DOJ on petition for review.

“Let it be discussed in court whatever the case may be,” he said.

Despite what has happened, Remulla assured that his family is “holding up very well.”

Asked on calls for him to resign his DOJ post, Remulla said:

“It’s the President’s call and, if I fail later on, I am not effective anymore in this position, then I will talk to the President about whatever has to be done in the future.”
