The Pasay City prosecutor’s office (OCP) is set to conduct preliminary investigation on charge of importation of illegal drugs against Juanito Jose D. Remulla III, son of Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla.
DOJ’s Prosecutor General Benedicto A. Malcontento said that Juanito Jose has been charged with importation of illegal drugs in violation of the Republic Act No. 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
Last Oct. 14, Juanito was charged with a non-bailable offense of possession of illegal drugs in a criminal charge sheet filed by the Las Pinas City OCP before the regional trial court (RTC).
Malcontento said the charge for importation of illegal drugs was originally filed before the Las Pinas City OCP which ruled that it should be referred to the Pasay City OCP.
“The case is for transmittal to the Pasay OCP,” Malcontento said.
Juanito Jose was arrested by agents of the Philippine Drugs Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group (NAIA-IADITG) last Tuesday, Oct. 11, in Las Pinas City where a parcel of marijuana kush (a high-grade variety) worth about P1.25 million was seized from him.
Justice Secretary Remulla has repeatedly assured that he will not meddle in the case of his eldest son.
Rulings of city and provincial prosecutors may still be appealed to the Office of the Secretary of Justice for review.
“Harapin na sa korte. Huwag na paabutin sa akin (Face it in court. Don’t let it reach me),” Remulla said.
He said that his that his cousin has been tapped as the lawyer of Juanito.
“Alam ng abogado ng anak ko na di pwede yan umabot sa akin (The lawyer knows that the case shouldn’t reach me),” he also said.
In an earlier statement, Remulla had said: “I will not (neither) intervene in nor influence my son’s predicament and I have not done so in any way.”
“A person should always face the consequences of his actions and I will let justice take its own course,” he added.
