NBI arrests ‘fake optometrist’

National Bureau of Investigation (2)

A “fake optometrist” has been arrested during an entrapment operation in Iriga City, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said on Wednesday, Oct. 12.

The NBI, in a statement, said that Josephine B. Nazarrea was arrested last Sept. 29 by NBI agents based in Naga City (NBI-Naga).

“NBI received a complaint from the Integrated Philippine Association of Optometrists, Inc. (IPAO-Camarines Sur) regarding the alleged illegal practice of Optometry they monitored in N. Balang Sagara Optical Clinic at the New Iriga City Public Market,” it said.

During the investigation, the NBI said it received a certification from the Philippine Regulation Commission (PRC) that “Lorenzo Nazarrea, Josephine Balang Nazarrea, Nancy Balang Sagara, and Hilda Balang do not appear on their database of registered licensed Optometrist.”

Thus, it said, it decided to conduct an entrapment operation which resulted in Nazarrea’s arrest.

After the arrest, Nazarrea was charged before the Iriga City Prosecutors Office with violations of Republic Act No. 8050, the Revised Optometry Law, it added.
