To Albay 1st district Rep. Edcel Lagman, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. should just release former Senator Leila De Lima instead of transferring her to another detention center.
This call was made after De Lima was taken hostage by inmates in the Camp Crame Custodial Center of the Philippine National Police (PNP) on the morning of Sunday, Oct. 9.
“In the aftermath of the hostage-taking of former Senator Leila de Lima, instead of giving her the option to be transferred to another jail as suggested by President Marcos, Jr., she must be granted freedom from a five-year odious and solitary confinement on fabricated drug charges,” Lagman said on Oct. 9.
Marcos offered to transfer the former Senator to another detention center after the incident. However, according to Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos, De Lima rejected the proposal.

“If her police custodians cannot secure her from a hostage-taker, once liberated the people themselves can be her guardians to protect her from harm. While well-meaning visitors were barred from greeting her on her birthday, the culpable laxity of her jailers has allowed an armed intruder to penetrate her cell and seize her hostage,” he concluded.
Lagman was referring to an incident last August 27 in which visitors were denied by the PNP from visiting De Lima on her birthday. Lagman was one of the visitors.
