Ukraine quotes Jose Rizal in underscoring stand vs 'enemy'

Philippine National Hero Jose Rizal has inspired Ukraine in its continuous fight against the "enemy."

In a Twitter post, Ukraine's Defense Ministry quoted Rizal in underscoring its stand in terms of military war.

"I don't see why I should bow my head when I could hold it high, or place it in the hands of my enemies when I can defeat them," the ministry said, which came from a line in Rizal's famous book, Noli Me Tangere.

Ukraine did not identify who was the "enemy" it was referring to, although it cited supposed numbers of losses from the Russian forces since it tried to occupy Ukraine in February 2022.

In a figure it released, Ukraine said around 61,000 Russian forces were eliminated since.

The European giant also supposedly lost some 2,435 tanks, 5,038 armored combat vehicles, 1,414 artillery, 341 multiple launch rocket systems, 177 air defense systems, 266 military jets, 232 helicopters, 1,032 drones, 246 cruise missiles, 15 warships and boats, 3,841 vehicles and fuel tanks and 132 special equipment.

The Philippine national hero was only among personalities quoted by the ministry in its battle against the enemy.

It also quoted famous lines from Russian writer Leo Tolstoy and English philosopher and lay theologian G. K. Chesterton, among others.
