NBI probes attack vs lady lawyer, son

National Bureau of Investigation

The National Bureau Investigation (NBI) has started probing the attack against lawyer Karen Quinanola-Gonzales and her son, Jeremy Keith, last Sept. 1 in Mandaue City.

NBI Spokesperson Giselle G. Dumlao confirmed the agency’s investigation on request of the family of the victims.

“Yes, the NBI is conducting an investigation on the said case. The family requested the NBI to conduct investigation,” Dumlao, a lawyer, said.

Police reports stated that Quinanola-Gonzales and her son were fired upon by unknown assailants on their way home in Barangay Tipolo in Mandaue City.

The reports also stated that the lady lawyer sustained a bullet wound in the neck while her son was hit in the back.

The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP)-Cebu City chapter condemned the attack and offered a P50,000 cash reward “to anyone who can give information that will lead to the capture of the shooter and all those who may have a hand to its commission.”

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has also started its own probe as it condemned the attack as a “brazen attempt” on the life of Quinanola-Gonzales, a lawyer working for the Cebu Port Authority.

"CHR vehemently decries this latest attempt against a lawyer and calls for swift action from all concerned authorities to ensure accountability of perpetrators," CHR Executive Director Jacqueline Ann de Guia, also a lawyer, said in a statement.
