Metro Manila may be back to “low risk” from “moderate risk” classification for Covid-19 by mid-September after seeing the peak of the Covid-19 wave driven by Omicron subvariants in early August, OCTA fellow Dr. Guido David said.
David on Thursday, Aug. 18, said that Covid-19 cases in Metro Manila may decrease to 500 cases per day by the end of August or the first week of September.
Based on the Department of Health data, Metro Manila had 1,098 new cases of Covid-19 on Aug. 18.
OCTA said the capital region remained at moderate risk for infections.
David noted that if the downtrend in cases continues, Metro Manila will be back to low-risk classification “probably around mid-September.”
He confirmed the “downward trend” in cases in Metro Manila after all Covid indicators—from infection numbers to hospitalizations—have actually dropped in the past few days.
However, the OCTA fellow pointed out that the projection may still change with the resumption of face-to-face classes on Aug. 22.
“That is a real possibility. We don’t know the extent of children’s wall of immunity, so outbreaks are possible,” David said.
He earlier advised authorities to take precautionary measures by vaccinating the learners and teachers, as well as improving ventilation at schools.
