Agriculture, fisheries production dropped in Q2 2022


The value of production in agriculture and fisheries decreased in the second quarter of 2022, a report released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) disclosed on Monday, Aug. 8.

While the production of crops and fisheries dropped, PSA Undersecretary Dennis Mapa said an increase in the production of livestock and poultry were noted during the period.

The PSA report noted that crops, which shared 54.9 percent of the total production in agriculture and fisheries, declined by -2.8 percent.

Meanwhile, higher value of production in palay and corn were recorded at 0.7 percent and 3.3 percent, respectively.

The livestock, with a 14.6 percent contribution to the total production in agriculture and fisheries, made a turnaround and posted a 2.1 percent growth this period, particularly the value of hog production which expanded by 3.0 percent.

Mapa noted that poultry, which accounted for 14.7 percent of the total production, went up by 7.8 percent.

All poultry commodities, except duck, recorded increases in the value of production.

Meanwhile, the fisheries production, with a 15.8 percent share in the total, contracted by -2.3 percent.

The report added that the double-digit decreases were noted in the value of production of the following -- tiger prawn (sugpo), blue crab (alimasag), frigate tuna (tulingan), mudcrab (alimango), cavalla (talakitok), and milkfish (bangus).

Mapa said based on the current prices of the production in the agriculture and fisheries sector, which amounted to P532.79 billion, grew by 6.2 percent this quarter.
