Herlene Budol accused of cultural misappropriation

People love Herlene Budol. They like it that she’s funny, sexy, authentic.

She has since put that clout into good use.

From being a TV host and dancer known as “Hipon Girl,” she has since landed several acting projects.

She is also now among several beauties vying for the Binibining Pilipinas crown, gaining even more following along the way, identifying herself as a true-blue “squammy.”

So far, so good.

Until recently.

Herlene raised not a few eyebrows wearing an afro for a pictorial.

Already a huge no-no, she added insult to injury with her statement.

It read: “I love my Fro' - it's not just a hairstyle ; it's a statement.”

Fans were quick to correct her.

Some of the comments:

“An Afro is not a fashion statement. This is straight up cultural appropriation. This isn't yours, so don't wear it for publicity. As a beauty queen you should know better!!”

“Mali ito beh. Pls delete.”

“It’s not her fault. She doesn’t know any better. It’s her management.”

The photo is still up on social media as of writing.

Herlene and her management are silent about the issue.
