(PHIVOLCS)

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake was detected off the northern coast of Batanes at around 9:43 p.m., Tuesday, June 28, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs traced the epicenter of the earthquake at 190 kilometers (km) northwest of Itbayat, Batanes and was shallow at a depth of 13 km.

Prior to the 5.1-magnitude earthquake, Phivolcs also recorded a 4.8-magnitude quake at around 9:34 p.m., which was traced at 205 km northwest of Itbayat, Batanes.

There were no recorded intensities, as the tremors were not felt in the immediate area.

Phivolcs said the earthquakes were tectonic, which means they were caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

It advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur due to these earthquakes.
