President Duterte on Saturday urged the next administration to continue the government's program in the railway system to give Filipinos better opportunities through mobility and connectivity across the country.
Duterte made the appeal as he led the opening of the Philippine National Railways (PNR) Lucena-San Pablo Commuter Line, which is part of the government's effort to revive the Bicol Express expanding 380 kilometers from Manila.
The outgoing President said an effective mass transport system will "make places accessible and easier to manage, thereby strengthening trade within rural and urban areas."
He added that such a program can boost the tourism sector "given the attractions and landmark stations near the terminals."
"Indeed, this project is proof of our commitment to enhance mobility and connectivity across the archipelago by improving a route and bringing convenience to our fellow Filipinos," he said in his speech.
Therefore, the President encouraged the next administration and those who will stay under the Department of Transportation to continue improving the country's railway system.
"It is my hope that you will never lose sight of this goal as the enhancement of this vital transportation connection will be the key to unlocking even better opportunities for our countrymen," he said.
The newly-opened commuter line within Laguna and Quezon will cut the travel time within the two provinces from an hour to only 30 minutes.
