Remember that viral P750 turon? Here’s what it looks like

Amanpulo's banana turon reveal for today's video

Over the weekend, Filipino netizens went nuts about a turon. At the center of the online conversation is the turon dish being served in Amanpulo, a luxury resort located on a private island in the Sulu Sea.

Turon is a local street food that is made of saging na saba (a native banana), brown sugar, and jackfruit all rolled up in lumpia wrapper and then deep-fried in hot oil. According to food historian Felice Prudente Sta. Maria, turon’s history can be traced back to the Spanish turrón, a European nougat confection. These days, we see turon being sold on the streets and even in supermarkets as a quick and convenient snack, and priced between P10 to P25, depending on where you are getting it. That’s why when netizens saw Amanpulo’s turon priced at P750, they can’t help but ask why is it so expensive.

If you’re still wondering, Khalel Czarine Tanalgo shared on social media what the famous Amanpulo’s banana turon looks like on a plate. She was served with four pieces of turon and a scoop of ube ice cream on the side, as promised on the menu.

About its taste, Khalel says that it was good. “It had sesame seeds, a bit of langka, peanut powder, and ube ice cream, which wasn't too sweet—just perfect for my liking,” she tells Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “Amanpulo is a one-of-a-kind experience, especially since I got to try their viral turon. It's definitely worth paying for. Like many would say, it's not only the food you're paying for, you're paying for the place and the ambiance, among others. Not to mention their customer service is top-tier. It's something you can not put a price tag on. It's really worth the splurge."

How about you? Would you like to try Amanpulo’s banana turon?
