Comelec: Fate of party-list system in the hands of Congress


The Commission on Elections (Comelec ) said on Friday, May 13, the fate of the existence of the party-list system is in the hands of Congress.

Comelec Acting Spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco pointed this out amid calls by President Duterte that the next administration should abolish the party-list system.

Laudiangco said the existence of the party-list system are matters “within the wisdom and jurisdiction of Congress.”

“Our constitutional mandate is administer all election laws,” the lawyer stated.

“For as long as there is that law providing for the party-list system, we will comply with that,” he added.

As his term nears its end, Duterte has urged the next President to abolish the party-list system.

The outgoing President lamented that the party-list system is being infiltrated the communists which “really want is to destroy government.”
