Defensor theorizes more politicians will back Marcos-Duterte tandem before May 9 polls

Quezon City mayoral bet and Anakalusugan Rep. Mike Defensor has theorized that more politicians will come out with support for the UniTeam tandem of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and running mate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.

According to Defensor, leaders who did not back the UniTeam candidates before election day would “stick out like a sore thumb.”

“Every politician wants to be in the good graces of the next president. Nobody really wants to stick out like a sore thumb as the governor of a province, or the mayor of a city, or the representative of a district where the next president lost,” Defensor said in a press statement on Sunday, April 10.

“We would not be surprised if Bongbong is now receiving phone calls from members of Congress, governors, and mayors conveying their assurances that they are absolutely committed to supporting him as the next president,” he added.

Defensor is UniTeam’s candidate in the Quezon City mayoral race in the upcoming 2022 polls.

The solon previously claimed that it was “statistically impossible” to overtake the Marcos-Duterte dynasties, citing the tandem’s survey leads.

In the most recent Pulse Asia survey for March 2022, preference for Marcos fell 4 percent from 60 to 54 percent, while preference for rival presidential candidate Vice President Leni Robredo jumped 9 percent from 15 to 24 percent.

As for their running mates, Duterte went up 3 percent from 53 to 56 percent while her rival, Senator Francis Pangilinan climbed 4 percent from 11 to 15 percent.

About 29 days remain before the 2022 national elections on May 9.
