A 5.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Surigao del Sur at around 6:24 p.m., Sunday, April 3, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs traced the epicenter of the earthquake at 75 kilometers (km) northeast of Bayabas, Surigao del Sur, and was shallow at a depth of 1 km.

It initially measured the earthquake at magnitude 6.1 but later revised it to 5.8.

Phivolcs said the quake felt as a moderately strong tremor at Intensity IV in Bayabas, Cantilan and Tandag City, Surigao del Sur, while it was weak at Intensity III in Rosario and San Agustin in Agusan del Sur.

Its instruments also recorded the quake at Intensity II in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte and Intensity I in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

It advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur due to this earthquake.

A 5.8-magnitude aftershock that occurred at around 7:22 p.m. was traced 25 km northeast of Bayabas, Surigao del Sur.

It was felt at Intensity IV in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur and Intensity III in Rosario, Agusan del Sur.
