Magnitude 5.2 quake hits Batanes — Phivolcs

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Batanes at around 9:53 p.m., Saturday, March 26, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs traced the epicenter of the earthquake at 40 kilometers (km) northeast of Basco, Batanes, and was shallow at a depth of 29 km.

Phivolcs initially measured the earthquake at magnitude 4.1 but later revised it to 5.2.

The quake was felt as a “weak” tremor at Intensity III in Basco.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

It advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur because this earthquake.
