MOVIEGOER: Korina: From hard to soft and back

Korina Sanchez-Roxas

After six years of being away from presenting (and commenting on) hard news, Korina Sanchez-Roxas says she welcomed her new series of TV specials on presidential interviews, a departure from mostly soft news on her long-running show, Rated Korina.

Korina took time to air her side on her controversial presidential interviews during a recent online chat with entertainment media. Did she go too soft in her adopted format?

She thinks that by presenting the candidates in their leisure hours, they became more relaxed in answering the tougher questions ahead. Korina said, “By design, I really wanted all the candidates to be known, not just for their political platforms or the usual issues, but for their rarely-seen human side as well. After all, they all have families, they all have their favorite pastimes, and most definitely, they know how to
laugh and have fun.”

“Ang isang president ay tao rin. At tayong lahat ay tumataya sa kabuuan ng tao at hindi lang sa isang seryosong lider na nakaupo at sumasagot ng de kahon na tanong.”

She also stood by her old, guiding principle, never to offend her subjects. “Ayoko magpahiya because hindi ko style yun. Para sa akin kung inimbita ko yan, he’s my guest. Hindi mo naman babastusin ang guest mo kapag pinapunta mo sa bahay mo.
Lalo na pinapunta pa nila ako sa bahay nila. But it doesn’t mean I didn’t ask the tough questions.”

The media landscape, she says, has changed dramatically, and she’s enjoying very much her current status as an independent, a free agent. Her long-running magazine show is beamed across different platforms simultaneously, reaching a much wider audience.

Journalism itself, she says, has evolved and now operates on multi-platforms. She also didn’t discount the possibility of working with AMBS, the broadcast network that will soon be launched by former senator, Manny Villar. Villar’s group has acquired the rights to a certain number of frequencies formerly assigned to ABS-CBN.

“Rated Korina: Upuan Ng Katohohanan” aired on A2Z Channel 11, Kapamilya Channel, TV5 and OnePH. The longer versions of the interviews are uploaded to the Rated Korina official YouTube channel.
