In Australia, there is a famous bakeshop called Goldelucks

Sounds familiar? Well, its previous owners were Filipinos

A birthday party is never complete without a birthday cake. In the Philippines, there are so many cake shops to choose from and among them is Goldilocks Bakeshop. But did you know that in Australia there is a dessert shop that resembles the brand's name, well, sounds like it?

Owned by young entrepreneur Phillip Kuoch, Goldelucks Doughnuts has been wowing Melbourne with its confectionery creations. Now, if you’re wondering if it has any connection with the Filipino brand, there is. Through a Tiktok post, Kuoch explained the story behind his shop’s name.

“I’m well aware that there’s a bakery chain in the Philippines called Goldilocks and obviously our name sounds really similar to this. When I took over the business from the previous owners, they were also Filipino, they told me that when they moved here, they wanted to start something that reminded them of home. So here we are,” he said. “I really didn’t like the name Goldelucks at first, but it’s really grown on me.”

It was in 2015 when Kuoch’s Cambodian parents acquired the bakeshop. But after his father went ill and his mother became the full-time carer, he took over their family business in 2018, even if he has no baking or business experience.

Today, despite the lockdowns in Melbourne due to the pandemic, Goldelucks Doughnuts thrived thanks to Kuoch’s marketing and journalism background and the brand’s online presence on Instagram and Tiktok. Apart from its doughnuts, the brand became famous thanks to its Explosion Boxes, with confetti and paper butterflies bursting out of the dessert box.

“The year before the lockdown, I set up an online store, but not much happened. A few boxes would sell now and then. We did not push the online store, as there wasn’t much customer interest,” Kuoch said in an interview. “My major change was seeing doughnuts as a gift to loved ones, not a simple bakery item. We were about much more than baking!”
