Following its inclusion in the 2021 International Research Networks Grant Scheme, the Technological Institute of the Philippines (T.I.P.) has signed a three-year partnership with Malaysia's Sunway University (Sun-U).

T.I.P. and Sun-U agreed in a virtual conference to increase the quality and quantity of research in Asia by collaborating on projects aimed at sustainability and planetary health.

T.I.P.'s newly established Center for Advanced Batteries, one of the new DOST Niche Centers in the Regions (NICER) for Research and Development, will collaborate with Sun-Center U's for Nano-Materials and Energy Technology to develop long-lasting lead acid batteries.

"Most of the things that have been powering the world's economy and way of life need to be deeply decarbonized. Research on how to obtain cleaner energy is something that Southeast Asia must take a lead on, especially since we have access to lots of natural resources," said T.I.P. TechnoCoRe Catalyst Principal Researcher Dr. Drandreb Earl Juanico.

In addition to a comprehensive review and development of each other's curriculum, the two universities intend to implement a visiting professorship and student exchange program.

Prof. Sibrandes Poppema, President of Sun-U, stated that the university is leveraging its collaborations to establish regional research networks, share valuable knowledge, and make a global impact.

To this, T.I.P. President Dr. Elizabeth Quirino-Lahoz concurred, saying, "When experts from various countries unite, we strengthen the community of researchers and inventors. When platforms for learning extend beyond the classroom, we transform our students to be curious, research-oriented, innovative and responsive to societal needs."
