Magnitudes 5.3, 4.4 quakes hit Davao Oriental -- Phivolcs

Offshore earthquakes measuring magnitudes 5.3 and 4.4 occurred east of Davao Oriental on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 23, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Based on its earthquake bulletin, the 5.3-magnitude quake occurred at around 2:23 p.m. with its epicenter traced 98 kilometers (km) southeast of Manay town, Davao Oriental province.

Before the magnitude 5.3 tremor, Phivolcs detected a 4.4-magnitude quake at around 2:15 p.m., which originated at 132 km southeast of Manay town.

Phivolcs did not record any initial intensity data from these earthquakes, however, it advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
